Q64189 Older Toshiba Laptop BIOS May Corrupt Windows Setup
Microsoft Windows 3 Retail Product (WIN3)
3.00
MS-DOS
Summary:
If you experience difficulties setting up Microsoft Windows version
3.00, you might need to update your BIOS. Specifically, the older BIOS
used in some models of laptops can cause a corrupt installation of
Windows.
More Information:
If you have a Toshiba T3100/20 or T3100e and you are having trouble
using the Windows version 3.00 Setup program (for example, you don't
have a highlight bar to select the computer type), make sure you have
BIOS version 4.20 or later. During the Windows installation, the Setup
program can write information to track 0 on your hard drive if you
have an earlier BIOS version. Installing this way can corrupt the file
allocation table and crash the hard drive.
The T3100e and T3100/20 are older models, and the Setup program does
not detect whether or not the hard drive has enough room to set up
Windows. You need to upgrade your BIOS before you attempt to set up
Windows.
Windows has been able to run on the following Toshiba computers with
current BIOS:
T1000XE
T1200XE
T1600
T3100/20
T3100e
T3100SX
T3200SX
T5100
T5200
T8500
